WHOLESOME LIVING IN SUBURBIA

About

hello! we’re olives & okra

Four generations

I started Olives & Okra in 2011 to share old and new family recipes. I added crochet and crafts and then, eventually, gardening tips. In 2020, I took a hiatus from blogging to help care for my aging parents.

Today, my daughter, Amanda, and granddaughter, Simone, will continue Olives & Okra as a lifestyle blog. We’ll write about family recipes, life topics, crafts and DIY projects, beauty and fashion, and well-being.

Join us! You’ll find plenty of topics of interest to you.

These are a few of our favorite things…

  1. We love making family recipes, creating new ones, trying new cuisines, dining out, and talking about all things food.
  2. We think of ourselves as do-it-yourselfers. We love to craft, repurpose furniture and other items, sew, and crochet.
  3. Pets, family, travel, parenting, grandparenting, and holidays are a few of our favorite things.
  4. We focus on self-care, wellness, fitness, and overall mental and physical health.
  5. We love Central Florida and all it offers – theme parks, nature preserves, festivals, cruises, farms, ranches, and arts and entertainment. The great weather is a plus, too!
  6. We love to garden, too, and watch plants and herbs grow. It’s not without its challenges in our hot and humid weather.
  7. We love coffee.

Okra is one of my favorite summer veggies. I picke Okra is one of my favorite summer veggies. I picked up a couple of pounds of fresh okra and several ripe tomatoes to make stewed okra and tomatoes for supper, but I later decided to make an okra and tomato casserole. I thought it would go well with fried pork chops. Disclaimer: Some of the links on Olives & Okra are affiliate links....

Baking is one of my favorite past times, especiall Baking is one of my favorite past times, especially cookies and cakes. Today I couldn’t decide between a decorated gingerbread man or cookies, but I finally settled on making my Vanilla Glazed Ricotta Cheese Cookies recipe dressed with a few Christmas candy sprinkles. The poor gingerbread man will have to wait a few more days when the kids have free time to help decorate....

It’s that time of year when squash and root vegeta It’s that time of year when squash and root vegetables abound. Butternut squash signals the beginning of cooler weather, a new season of hot soups and stews. Roasted butternut squash soup, roasted white pumpkin soup, and chocolate chili are at the top of my list. This is a vegan recipe for roasted butternut squash soup. I use homemade vegetable stock with carrots, assorted bell peppers, celery, onions, and fresh sage leaves....

Southern Squash Casserole is a widely popular dish Southern Squash Casserole is a widely popular dish in the South. I first tried it years ago at a restaurant in Orlando called the Black Eyed Pea and quickly became addicted. Until then, I only had yellow squash, or crookneck squash, stewed with onion, butter, salt, and pepper or dredged in cornmeal and pan-fried. Until I tried the casserole, yellow squash was not on my list of favorite foods....
